The Persian Gulf War
The Persian Gulf War was a war against the Collation Forces lead by the United States against Iraq. Iraq had recently invaded the small country of Kuwait, which was a massive oil producer. Iraq taking control of Kuwait threatened both the world economy, because of oil reserves, and the safety of other countries in the Middle East. The Collation Forces, made up of 39 countries, began sending troops to Saudi Arabia to form a defensive stance in August of 1990. They waited in Saudi Arabia for about 5 months until the actual war began on January 17, 1991 with air raids. After just weeks of air attacks and three days of Collation Forces on the ground the war ended with a Collation Forces victory on February 27, 1991.
Cost of the War
Total United States Cost Estimate: $61 billion
Covered by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and other Gulf States: $36 billion
Covered by Germany and Japan: $16 billion
Total U.S. Casualties: 382
Estimated Iraqi Casualties: Over 100,000
The graph to the left shows the price of oil, and you can see the spike of price in 1990 and 1991. This is because Kuwait and Iraq were both major oil producers, and when sanctions were put into place against Iraq by the United Nations all trade of oil stopped with them. Halting trade obviously affected the supply and demand of oil, causing the price to inflate despite efforts by the U.S. to try and prevent drastic rises in prices.

Our Project
This website was made by students of Da Vinci Charter Academy for a class project. The project is meant to integrate English and History, and teach us about the wars America has been in. The main goal of this project is to use this website and out communication and critical thinking skills to answer four driving questions about America at war. These questions are; how does was affect the individual, how does war affect society, what is the cost of war, and can war, with all of it's destruction, be beneficial? This website aims to contain content that will hopefully help answer these though-provoking questions.
